Reclaimed Wood Light Sculpture

I saw this page on Touch of Modern the other day and thought Daaaayum that is one fine lamp. Then I looked at the price tag and thought sonnuva... that's an investment in my lighting needs. It was then that I remembered that I'm an artisan too. So why not make a lamp just like it. I mean could there really be over a $1000 worth of skill and material in that lamp or was someone just being overzealous. Well, the idea of it on the whole is genius, so props to the fellow for creating it. But it's not original. I've seen many installation artworks that use cross-sectioned objects in them.

The other thing that would keep this lamp from joining all the other things I surround myself with is that fact that it doesn't ship to my home here in Canada. But that's all right, we're going to make one of these things ourselves. And then the lamp will have more sentimental meaning won't it.

Where to start? Using my artistic superpowers I stare at the object. Letting my imagination literally pull it apart. I can now see each of the components that it's made of in my minds eye. I will need to either make these parts or purchase these parts. Lets break that down.

Parts List:

1 piece of raw Cedar or any other log you want.
1 piece of metal bar 1/4" - 1/2" diameter (this gets cut in half to make you 2 supports.)
1 piece of metal, heavy wood or stone for the base.
1 lighting kit preferably LED so you don't risk a fire (Home Depot).

Looks like everything but the wood can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot.

I did some digging and found out that a hunk of raw wood is often called a bowl blank. And you can get a cedar one for around $15 USD on the web. Here is one on eBay. It's close to what I want but we're not just there yet. I'll have to do some more leg work.

Note: Whatever sized metal bars you get. You'll need a drill bit of equal diameter. So you can cut the holes that the bars will slide into.

I'm not sure when I will get around to making this. But this is more or less my plan. Looking at the parts I think I can do the whole lamp for under $100 so where they get off wanting $2500 originally is insane. but whatever. Stay tuned for updates.
